Choosing a Custom Interior Door

Interior doors are an important design element but are also functional in cutting down noise and providing privacy. The material you choose is important to the design, durability and functionality of the doors.

Router Carved MDF Interior Doors

MDF is an ideal candidate because of their combination of quality, price and durability. There are design options available with MDF that cannot be executed with solid wood or molded doors. MDF doors do not have a grain providing a smooth finish ideal for painting.

Solid Wood Doors

Solid wood is a classic and elegant choice for a custom interior door. They offer the option of being painted or stained.

Hollow Core Doors

This cheaper option for replacing interior doors is made of a plywood or molded composite shell and hollow inside. They do not provide much of the sound barrier between rooms and are the flimsiest of the available options.

Solid Core Door – Similar to hollow core doors accept they are filled with a wood fiber interior.

Door Slabs or Prehung Door Units

New constructions and remodels usually opt for prehung doors. If you are remodeling and your door jams and trim are in relatively good condition, you may decide to opt for just ordering the door slab.

We Recommend Woodgrain Doors

Woodgrain interior and exterior doors are LDF (Low-Density Fiberboard) doors. Woodgrain manufactures solid paint grade 1 3/8” and 1 3/4” LDF doors in sizes from 1’0” to 3’0” in width and from 6’8” to 8’0” in height. PrimeCraft makes custom sizes for our customers that can range in widths greater than 3’0” and heights that can extend over 8’ but not taller than 10’.

Woodgrain exterior doors are manufactured from a special water resistant MDF and then coated with a special protective exterior coating. Woodgrain makes the doors in the same styles and patterns as their interior LDF doors so homeowners, builders, and developers can now match their interior doors with their exterior doors. They also include, as an option, a wood inset in the stile of the doors for customers who simply feel more comfortable inserting hinges into a piece of wood. However, with the use of coarse thread screws, the wood edge is not necessary.

As an additional option, we pre-hang doors upon request.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)

MDF is a composite board made from wood fibers and synthetic resin binders bonded together under high heat and pressure. This manufacturing process creates a board that is flat, smooth, uniform and free of knots and grain, as well as a board that can be easily shaped into almost any form. High quality, clean, sharp contours and edges can be achieved in a wide range of profiles and designs. This uniform composition allows the finish to be applied directly to the surface, creating a smooth, seamless appearance.
